Hello, I'm Makiwo G, and I sell Warhammer in Nagano Prefecture.
This time, I'm painting the [Tyranid Prime (Winged)] that came with Weekly Warhammer.
I hope you'll stay with me until the end.
Base coat is 'White Scar Spray'
Since I sometimes use Contrast paints, I start with a white base coat.
However, I painted the Tyranid's skin with 'Wraithbone,' so it probably would have been faster to use 'Wraithbone' for the spray as well.
Carapace is 'Leviathan Purple' or 'Naggaroth Night', skin is Wraithbone, pink is Magos Purple
Since this was my first Tyranid, I wasn't sure how to paint the areas that are slightly pink, like the arms.
When in doubt, just try it! So, I thinned the Contrast paint 'Magos Purple' with 'Contrast Medium' and applied it all over (the fingertips are white at this point, as I plan to paint them black later).
Paint roughly → Correct carefully
Citadel paints have good opacity, so even if it looks like the image, you can fix it quickly.
Don't hesitate, just paint!
Wing Gradient
I painted the wings with 'Magos Purple' once, but then I felt it wasn't quite right, so I repainted them with 'Wraithbone' over the top.
After that, I applied a gradient, making it lighter towards the tips.
I did the same with the scythe-like claws on the hands, making them darker towards the tips.
Wing membrane: 'Guilliman Flesh' → 'Targor Rageshade'
Makiwo G's recommended paint: Targor Rageshade
'Targor Rageshade' is my favorite shade paint.
When painted over 'Wraithbone' or 'Magos Purple', it looks like this.
The bottom is before painting.
I love this color so much that I've written a dedicated article about it before.

Makiwo G's Gradient Tips
For this Tyranid, I painted the skin with 'Wraithbone.'
So, for the brightest part (the highlight on the right claw), I used 'Wraithbone' instead of white.
Specifically, I mixed 'Dechala Lilac' + 'Wraithbone' to create a subtle purple, and then used 'Wraithbone' alone for the highlight.
I plan to do the same for the thumb and the small claws on the elbows, which are currently painted black.

※Added on 11/1: Explaining gradients using a claw image!

I posted this image earlier, and since it has distinct steps, it seems easy to explain how I create gradients.
First, the colors used for the claws are as follows ↓.
It's fine as it is, but let's take it a step further and mix it with the adjacent color to create an intermediate shade of two colors.
Example: For Dechala Lilac
Near 'Wraithbone,' the ratio of 'Wraithbone' to 'Dechala Lilac' is 8:2.
Near 'Cacophany Purple,' the ratio of 'Dechala Lilac' to 'Cacophany Purple' is 2:8, and so on.
If you don't understand, please comment on Twitter or this blog, and I'll try to write a more detailed article about that specific part (though it might take some time).
Feel free to ask! ☺
Also, there's no end to how much detail you can put in, so it's best to paint within your comfort level. ☺
Carapace Layering
The process of adding "///" lines to the carapace, which I personally consider the most enjoyable part of painting Tyranids.
This is my first time using the Vallejo 'Pro Modeler Brush', and I found it to be a user-friendly brush that isn't too expensive, is reasonably priced, and seems durable.
I haven't used it enough yet for the bristles to bend, so I'll write a separate article on how long it lasts.
The individual packaging is also a welcome bonus from the perspective of someone sending packages.
Summary
This time, I painted the Winged Tyranid Prime that came with Weekly Warhammer (the whole model isn't finished yet, but I'll publish it when I can).
Next up will probably be either painting the Marine that came with issue 1, another Tyranid Lictor (is that what it's called?), or painting miniatures for Blood Bowl, which I'll start in November.
Finally, if you found this article interesting or helpful, please consider supporting our shop. It would make Makiwo G very happy and encourage more blog updates!
Vallejo brushes are in stock and can be shipped immediately.
Highly recommended!
That's all for this time.
Happy painting! ノシ
